Last night, we saw a trade between the Athletics and the Astros: The breakdown is as follows:
- Athletics receive INF Jed Lowrie and RHP Fernando Rodriguez
- Astros receive 1B Chris Carter, RHP Brad Peacock, C Max Stassi
This trade makes sense for both sides. Lowrie can play 3B/SS/2B. It should be interesting to see how Bob Melvin uses him. Hiroyuki Nakajima has a lock on SS after signing on from Japan. Josh Donaldson is not really a good hitter at third, which might make the most sense for Lowrie and let Scott Sizemore and Jemile Weeks battle it out at 2B. Rodriguez adds to the bullpen depth. Stassi is a low-level catcher with some potential. Peacock struggled at AAA this year, but considering Oakland's depth, he could be moved. He'll compete for a starting rotation gig with Houston. Carter is an intersting pick-up. He should be best utilized as a platoon or rotation with Brett Wallace and Carlos Pena
Sanchez to the Pirates?
Jonathan Sanchez is close to a minor league deal with the Pirates. He has been next to awful recently, but because he's a lefty with strikeout stuff, he'll be out of work for a shorter time than Rob Ryan.
Brian Burres goes to Taiwan
This is just for my own personal joy. Brian Burres - remember him? has signed with....the Lamigo Monkeys. Yup. (Per NBC HarballTalk)
Mets interested in Bourn?
Scott Boras' FAs are pretty much the only ones left: Valverde, Lohse and Michael Bourn. The Mets should really look at Bourn: he'd be great at the leadoff spot and in that big ballpark in CF. No word on whether his career will crash and burn like everyone else not named David Wright on the Mets.
